The 1971 - 1972 Football Association Division One League title was won by Derby County. Derby Count where managed by Brain Clough and his assistant manager Peter Taylor. Clough and Taylor had taken Derby County up to Division one winning the 1968-69 Football association Division 2 title. Clough had a successful playing carer mainly in the lower divisions for Middlesbrough and Sunderland scoring over 250 goals. He would also win two England caps. Much success was due to some of Cloughs influential signings including Dave Mackay who had signed for Derby from Tottenham Hotspur during the 1968 -69 Football Association Division One season during this season he would win FWA Player of the year. Derby would win the League over Leeds United, Clough found Leeds style of football most distasteful and he was never shy when it came to letting others know his opinions on Leeds manager Revie. Leeds would beat Arsenal in the 1972 English Football Association Cup Final.
The Football Writers Association Player of the year was legendary England Goalkeeper Gordon Banks. He picked the award while playing for Stoke City. Banks was England’s number one during the 1966 World Cup. He is save against Pele during the 1970 World Cup Finals is still considered one of the greatest performed. His career would be tragically cut short after a road traffic accident left him with sight in one eye. With 35 goals including a record 15 from the penalty spot Manchester City’s Francis Lee was leading goal scorer. It was considered that he would go down easily in the box though by the standards of the modern game this was just a sign of things to come. He would score over 200 career goals including 10 for England.
