The 1960-1961 English Football League Division 1 was won by Tottenham Hotspur, to add to this victory Tottenham also did the double winning the second major trophy in English football the 1961 English Football Association Cup, Tottenham were the first team to complete this Football statistic in England during the 20th century. This was also the last time to date that Spurs won the top domestic honour in England. Bill Nicholson was a player for Tottenham the only other time Spurs have won this trophy, this was the 1950-51 English Football League 1st Division. Sheffield Wednesday one of the oldest clubs in England having been founded in 1867 with root's dating back to 1820 came second this season. Burnley the reigning champions could not add to the 1959/1960 English Football League title, they could only manage 4th.

The 1960-61 English Football Writers Association player of the season was Danny Blanchflower of Tottenham Hotspur who added to his previous win during the 1957-58 season. Jimmy Greaves of Chelsea struck an impressive 41 goals to the English Football League Division 1 goal scoring charts; this impressive football statistic is still to this day Chelsea's record for goals in a season. Greaves has one of the greatest goal scoring records in English Football winning the Division 1 Golden Boot on 6 separate occasions. An injury was to rob of a World Cup winner medal in 1966, he would have been one of the first on Sir Alf Ramsey’s team sheet, however he missed the entire competition. Jimmy Greaves would score 47 goals in 54 games for the national team.
