1995 Premier League

During the summer of 1995 Liverpool Football Club beat Everton to the signature of Nottingham Forrest football player Stan Collymore, the striker's £8,500,000 fee breaks the British transfer record which had been set during the 1994-1995 FA Carling Premiership season with Manchester United's £7,000,000 capture of Andy Cole from Newcastle United. This per-season also see's the arrival of Dutch Striker Dennis Bergkamp for £7,500,000 joining Arsenal from Inter Milan. Arsenal also purchase England midfielder David Platt for £4,750,000 making him the world's most expensive player with a combined total of £22,150,000 in transfer fees, Platt had been previously voted PFA player of the year during the 1989-1990 English Football League Division 1 season. David Genoa joins Newcastle United for £2,500,000; the Frenchman is a skilful but temperamental player. Kenny Daglish steps aside as Blackburn manager despite taking Rovers to the Premiership title with his assistant Ray Hartford becoming manager with Daglish taking a board room level position. Manchester United make whole sale changes selling Andrei Kanchelskis to Everton, Mark Hughes to Chelsea and Paul Ince to Inter Milan.

On the opening day of the 1995-1996 FA Carling Premiership season Stan Collymore opens his Liverpool account scoring a spectacular goal against Sheffield Wednesday, this proves to be enough as Liverpool Football Club win 1-0. Manchester Unite introduce a number of youth players into the team as first team regulars these include Paul Scholes, Garry Neville and David Beckham. United subsequently loose 3-1 at Villa Park. Match of the Day pundit and former Liverpool player declaring "you'll never win anything with kids." By the end of August 1995 Newcastle United top the Premiership with an impressive 100 percent record. Leeds United are second helped by the impressive goal scoring of Tony Yeboah. Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa are third, fourth and fifth respectively separated by goal difference. Newcastle lose their unbeaten record first game of September losing 1-0 to Southampton however this a mere blip and after 7 games they have an impressive 18 points from 7 games. At the bottom of the table Manchester City have the unenviable football statistic of a single point. Midway through the month Robbie Fowler hits 4 against Bolton Wanders in a 5-2 victory for Liverpool; Tony Yeboah scores a hat-trick against Wimbledon as does Alan Shearer against Coventry City. Dennis Bergkamp finally manages to silence the critics who had branded the Dutchman a flop. The major football news is that Jean-Marc Bosman succeeds at the European Court of Justice as they rule that player have the right to move on for free once their contract are over, this has major ramifications for players, transfer's of players out of contract are still referred to this day as Bosman transfers.

Eric Cantona returns to Premiership football after his 8 month after his infamous Kung-fu kick during the previous season. Middlesbrough goes samba mad as they buy Brazilian International Juninho, the pint sized player has the reputation as one of the most skilful footballers in the world. Les Ferdinand ensures that Newcastle United stay top of the FA Carling Premiership table as he scores his 100th league goal as Newcastle beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park, meanwhile drop points during a 2-2 draw with Liverpool . Juninho makes his debut for Middlesbrough in a 1-1 draw against Leeds United in November 1995. Arsenal beat man Utd 1-0 thanks to Dennis Bergkamp. By the end of November Newcastle are top by 5 points. Manchester City however manage to climb out of the bottom 3, with QPR, Coventry City and Bolton Wanders taking up the relegation places.

Duncan Ferguson returns for Everton in the month of December 1995 following time spent in prison for the infamous assault on Paul McStay while playing for Glasgow rangers during the 1993-1994 Scottish Football Association Premier League season. Newcastle United win their 10th Premiership home game in a row beating Nottingham Forrest 3-1 however Man Utd beta this in late December reducing the gap to just seven points. Liverpool and Tottenham take third and fourth spot; Stan Collymore scoring a couple of goals against Southampton and Bolton, the Wanders are bottom at the end of the year 8 point away from safety. In the month of December 1995 Alan Shearer scores his hundredth Premiership goal, becoming the first player to achieve this football statistic.

In January Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan signs Faustino Asprilla from Italian club sign Parma for £7,500,000, Newcastle increase their lead in the Premiership to 12 points. Robbie Fowler reaches 20 Premiership goals for the season enabling Liverpool to take second place; this month also sees Liverpool sell Nigel Clough to Manchester city for £1,500,000. Alan Shearer scores his fourth hat-trick of the season at the start of February in a 3-1 win against Bolton February is also the month that see's Newcastle drop points to Man United with a loss and a draw, while United carry on winning putting 6 in against hapless Bolton, the Lancashire team look like certain relegation candidates. United cut Newcastle's lead to a single point winning away at St. James Park thanks to Eric Cantona's goal. By the end of the month Fergusons United are top by 2 point however it's in Newcastle's hands as they have played 2 games less. However Newcastle don't capitalise on this a drop point to Liverpool Football Club in one of the greatest Premiership games, the game end 4-3 with Collymore scoring a last minute winner. Thanks to an Andrei Kanchelskis hat-trick Sheffield Wednesday pulled into the relegation battle. The bottom three clubs though don't not win a single game between them during the last 2 months of the season, Manchester City, QPR and Bolton Wanders are sent down. By the last game of the season Manchester United nee a single point to clinch the Premiership title, the beat Middlesbrough 3-0 away at the newly built Riverside stadium. This is an incredible fight back buy United considering at one point they were 12 points of the lead. It would have been forgiven to do a football bet against Manchester United under the circumstances at mid season, however it must have been painful for the Newcastle United fans to see the Manchester club crowned 1995-1996 FA Carling Premiership champions.
